The farmers around here are mainly smallholders that have made a solid push to produce specialty coffee that reflects the characteristics of the region's terroir. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eL\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003euis Gerardo Bravo Ordonez acquired Finca El Chaferote almost 40 years ago. Luis began cultivating commodity grade coffee, but his ambition and desire to leverage coffee as a way to improve his familys quality of life led him to an interest in producing specialty coffee. He began experimenting with new varieties such as Pink Bourbon and Geisha, and attending trainings to improve production at the farm. In 2019, Luis participated in his first Cup of Excellence. In 1983 Roberto Diaz (Fernando Diaz's father) acquired the land and created what has become Finca Santa Ana with a different vision for the land. Following 39-years of hard work, today, Finca Santa Ana is committed to specialty coffee and the quality of its founder. When the third wave of specialty coffee arrived in the mid-2000’s, he found his niche and his focus became quality and processing of micro-lots for specialty roasters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince the passing of Roberto Diaz in 2012 the agricultural and processing parts of the farm have been run by Fernando (Nando) and his sister (Maria Olga) who manages the marketing. Prior to the passing of their father the children were not involved with the farm. When the conversation would come up at family gatherings none of the siblings was interested in the operation. They had all established their own careers away from the farm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTheir father would become upset that none of his children were interested in the farm that had made him so proud. After his passing, Fernando recognized the time was right for him to step up. Initially, his thought was to learn how to manage the farm and then hire an agricultural manager to run the farm for the family. But in the process, Fernando found himself enjoying the peace that the land offers and sharing these experiences with his family. The next generation was now involved.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFernando’s constant experimentation and exploration has led to the creation of this Pineapple Process lot. This processing is achieved by allowing the fruit and juice of pineapples to ferment for 24 hours, building a colony of wild yeasts and bacteria. This starter is then added to the de-pulped coffee seeds, augmenting the microbial colony during the fermentation process. During this time Finca El Socorro has had consistently strong showings in the competition, often placing in the top five. This puts half of the country in the northern hemisphere and the other  half in the southern hemisphere. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBrief History \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCoffee  was  first  introduced  to  Ecuador  early  in the  19th  century  and  rapidly became  a  primary source  of  income  for  small  landholders.  Ecuadorian producers have produced both Arabica,  known  for  its  sweet  and  soft  flavors  (0.8  to 1.4% caffeine  content)  and  Robusta  known  for its  stronger  and  harsh  flavors  and  higher caffeine content  (1.77  to  3.5  %  caffeine  content).  The  Arabica historically was exported to neighboring countries of Colombia and Peru, while the Robusta was, and still is, used for the production of instant coffee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA  dramatic  decline  in  Ecuador’s coffee  production  began  in  the late  1980s  with coffee  often going unharvested because of low prices on the world market and drought conditions caused by the climate phenomenon “El  Niño.”  Combined  with  a lack of an effective coffee infrastructure, and poor production techniques coffee was failing in Ecuador  and  many  producers stopped producing coffee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy  the  mid-2000’s,  the  Specialty Coffee movement started to grow in neighboring countries of Colombia and Peru. And with the growing demand worldwide for Specialty Coffee, some entrepreneurial spirited farmers found the inspiration to invest in coffee once again. They planted single, unique varietals, in high altitude regions like  the mountains  of Pichincha in the north and the biodiverse province of Loja in the south.
